New to BYC - Coop in progress and picking up the chickens in 3 weeks

Hello Everyone,

My name is Bill Kennedy, I live in Newfoundland, Canada. Last October my wife and I moved into my Grandparents old homestead, which is about 40 mins outside St. John's. Everything on this property was built by hand by my Great Grandfather over 100 years ago. We have a carriage house, a small feed shed and a stable with a hay loft. The old root cellar is beyond repair unfortunately.

I am currently coverting the old feed shed (10' x 15') into a coop. My Grandparents always had free range chickens back in the day, which was easier then than now since neither of them "worked real jobs" (how envious I am of their way of life).

I am picking up 12 hens in three weeks and am in a rush to complete my coop in time. The big problem I am having is that roots and big rocks are impeding my ability to properly bury the hardware cloth around the edges of the coop and run.

I will post some picks in the thread on chicken coop construction for all to see. I have many picks on my camera that will go up in the coming weeks.

Thanks to all the active posters on BYC who have been a great help in getting me started. Without this wealth of information things would have been a lot more difficult.

It is quite amazing how popular this forum is and how many people are developing a passion for raising their own chickens.

For my part it is largely an issue of food security, sustainable organic gardening and general enjoyment of living off the land.

They get more addictive the longer you're around them.
