Hi y'all, just joined BYC and wanted to introduce myself. I'm living in NC, have 4 kids, 2 cats, 9 chickens, 4 ducks and 1 hubby. :) Our ducks are Indian Runners, 3 ducks 1 drake. Chickens are mixed bunch: 6 MG/Bs (2 roosters, 4 hens), 1 production red hen, 1 barred rock hen and 1 red sex-link hen. I did have 1 more rooster, 1 more MG/B hen and a black sex-link, but our resident hawk took them, all three my favorites! :( Our ducks and chickens are all free range and cooped at night. If I can figure out how to upload from my phone, I will post some pics. I'm hoping to increase my flocks this spring with some more chickens and ducks, might not have to buy any chicks though, one of my MG/b hens is sitting on a clutch of 14!

So, I'm sitting in the house, when I hear my chickens putting up a fuss. I ran outside to find one of my ducks being eaten by a hawk. Any idea how to deter the hawks, and keep them away from my birds?? Btw: this just happened 20 mins ago. I'm sitting on my porch, and can hear the hawk calling as its flying around the edge of the woods by my yard.

OMG, I'm so sorry to hear that! How awful

The best place for advice on hawks is the predators and pests section. Here:

Best of luck and I hope you find a solution. In the meantime keep an eye on your flock or keep them confined to a smaller area or, even better, a covered area. From my own experience with hawks I learned they'll come back if they know there's food and it's easy prey.
