We're new to chickens so of course we have tons of questions.
Anyone in our area willing to share what they think would be good
chickens for us to start off with? We'd like to stay away from roosters (I
wouldn't mind, but my husband does!) and will probably stay under 5 hens
    to start.
    Thanks!!!

Welcome from Southern California! We've only had chickens for a year so I'm a bit inexperienced, but I can tell you that they all definitely have their own personalities and sometimes the references that tell you about each breed are a little off (of course; nothing's 100%). For instance, everything I read said that Araucanas were decent layers, not excellent, but our little Sadie laid regularly through molting season and the shortest days of winter. We could count on her while the rest of the girls have been lagging, and she was our best layer until one of our newer pullets starting laying recently. Good luck and have fun! You'll be able to find answers to just about all of your questions here.
