    Hello everyone,

My name is Katie. My husband and I just moved to Illinois in December of 2016 and we decided to start raising laying hens. It has been GREAT so far. I absolutely love them, they are so funny to watch and observe how they begin to form patterns and habits. I have been scouring this website since before we even brought them home because I had NO CLUE how to care for chickens. But I'm so glad that we took that step. I'm sure I will be doing much more research on here in the coming months!

We definitely will! They came from a farm of about 100 in one small garden shed to lots of room. We only have 10 of them and they seem to be doing just fine! We started getting eggs already (which was very surprising because I didn't think they'd come until spring), but I love collecting them. It's like Christmas Day every time I go out there and find an egg (or 2) in the nest boxes!

Hi Katie, it's nice to have you here. I can see your enthusiasm for your flock shining right through!

If you'd like to 'meet' other members in IL, you can find your state thread using the link at the bottom of my post. Sometimes it's helpful to chat with others that are in your general area.

    Have fun!

So far so good. I've been looking on the Illinois thread, any tips on finding people that live near you? Trying to go through each part of the thread is going to be exhausting.

No I collect eggs year round, but I make sure I got hens at different ages(months) if they were all hatched at the same time they "Might" all stop laying for some weeks at the same time---then feeding a flock of hens for weeks and having to go to the grocery store and buy eggs----is no fun---LOL. But they will start back.
