new to chickens!

Hi just wondered if anyone could advise me, we have two beautiful little silver speckled cochins

and one has started laying - so far one egg every oter day. The other chicken has so far no layed ... is this normal and is there anything we need to do to encourage her to lay ?:|

There is nothing you can do to make her start laying, she'll do it in her own time. Now that the days are getting longer it should help encourage her. They need 14 hours of light a day to lay. Enjoy the eggs you are getting.

Well this makes me sound really thick but i'm not exactly sure how old they are ... they came to live with us in august last year (a surprise birthday present) and so i would guess at about 15 mths as they were not small chicks when we had them. Its still quite changable here ... good old british weather. so i hadnt expected them to start laying while it was still quite cool, but am really learning about them as i go.
