Hello,
I am located in Vincennes,IN.

I always look at chicks, and have always wanted silkies...but they're hard to find. Anyways today while at my local TSC..I saw that they had bantams in...so I inquired and got 6 chicks. I believe the are cochin bantams....

I have chick starter, water, and a tote. I have papper towl down as bedding.. I showed them where the water and the starter was located. I have them a heat lamp for them..

Okay, so I am wanting these as "pets"... I am looking for a do and don't type thing...
I want to hold them and not make them sick.. Is it okay if I hold them?

I mean I am new to chick owning...I have owned dogs, pigeons, parots, rats...etc...but not chicks.

That being said...any information or links to information would be awesome. I am going to check things out through this site..I think it will be a huge help.

You need to hold ans snuggle them until you can't take it any more! It makes for much nicer chickens.

Just be sure to wash your hands before and after.

Get started in the learning center here, and then feel free to post for specific questions. The search engine is a GREAT TOOL--so use that too!

Congratulations on your new little chicks. It sounds like you have done some research and have them set up in a nice brooder. Do you have a thermometer in there to monitor the temperature? Is there enough room for them to get away from the light if they want to? As for holding them, it would be best to wait a few days until they settle in before handling them much - especially if they are only a few days old. Glad you're here - you'll learn a lot on BYC - be sure to use the search bar up there on the right or the Search function on the blue menu bar if you have specific questions - but if you can't find answers through searching, don't hesitate to ask - there are many friendly and knowledgeable chicken people here. Good luck!

Thank you all for the replies.

Yeah, I looked up the basic info a while back when I went looking for bearded silkies...but no luck really do that...they are of a higher cost. I also think I went looking at the wrong time....

Yep, I have a thermometer in with them. I have it heated near their food, and cool near their water.
They love their lamp...it goes off and they go from being quiet to peeping up.
