(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens? This will be my first "real" chicken coup, etc.. A few years ago I had 2 chickens. One died and the other began laying eggs. I was soooo excited over that first egg! I had to show it to everybody. It was small, light brown and almost too cute to eat. I had to keep looking at it for a while. Then I lucked out and got another egg the next day and so I wanted to see if I could get enough to make at least one breakfast. That took a few days, but it sure was fun watching that bowl in the fridge fill up! So, once a week for about a year, we had a "free" breakfast. When we moved here to South Central KY, I knew I would eventually talk my husband into letting me get chickens again. He's decided to "give" me the 100 yo oak barn wood corn crib to convert into a chicken coup on the right, run in the center, and feed & supplies storage on the left. The whole building is about 20' x 30', so there's plenty of room for what I want to do. I hope to be ready by Spring. (2) How many chickens do you have right now? Right now, I don't have any. But I've been looking online, reading, studying, etc. about the different breeds. I think 10 total will more than enough. (3) What breeds do you have? As mentioned above, I don't have any but here are three that I'm the most drawn to; the Black Sumatra, the Black Frizzle Cochin, and the Silkie. And a fourth "maybe" is the White Crested Black Polish. (4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? Martha Stewart and a link from another site, but I don't remember which one. I began reading through the forum threads and was thrilled to see that this is a very friendly and very active group. I've been to some just to find out that the last post was 2 yrs ago - ridiculous. So, I'll be actively reading everything, posting thoughts, and asking advice as often as I need. Which may be quite a bit once I really get started. (5) What are some of your other hobbies? We're bikers, so we enjoy riding as often as possible. I enjoy research. I write books, and teach classes online. I am a Reiki healer/master/teacher. I love studying herbs and how to use them in various ways, such as crafts, soaps, oils, etc.. I do a lot of wood burning on pieces cut from some of our 100 yr old tobacco barn, which we've started converting into my craft shop, herb drying space, storage, and my husband's workout room, with lots of extra room left over. I'm rather excited about it all. (6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share. We have 10 acres at the end of a county road, on which we have 5 horses, 1 donkey, 2 dogs, 3 cats, and 1 Blue & Gold Macaw. I hope to have chickens, rabbits, ducks, and maybe geese. But trying to convince my husband will take a while. Its taken 2 yrs to get my chicken plan "ok'd"! By the time its all "ok'd" I'll be almost 60! I guess my 50th birthday present is the chicken plan put on the agenda! Woohoo! Finally!
