I just got my first flock on Saturday. What steps do I need to take to get my new babies used to me instead of running when I change their food and water?

Welcome to BYC. Chickens are a prey species and tend to flee especially when approached from above. When changing g feed and water and cleaning move slowly and talk to them in a soft voice. The larger the brooder the more comfortable chicks tend to be in my experience.

Once they learn you're the bringer of all good things to eat, they'll get friendlier. It takes time so be patient.

Hi, welcome and congratulations on your new chicks - they will get used to you very soon, I'm sure.
If you check out the Learning Centre, you'll find a whole host of resources on all things chicken.

Your state thread is worth joining as you will get to know other BYC members in your area (just type your state in the search box). In fact, the search box should become your best friend [IMG] Lastly but by no means least, the members here are amazing - very friendly and helpful, so if you need an answer to a question or simply want some reassurance that what you are doing is ok, then post away - we all help each other out here at BYC.

    All the best

Chickens/chicks do startle easy - everything loves to eat chicken . When they see a big hand reach into the brooder that can really freak them out. It's nothing personal.
