The Orpingtons, such as Buff Orpingtons or the Black Australorps make great pets, especially for kids. These 2 are very docile and tolerant of being carried around. And they are quite affectionate too. My Black Australorps are huge lap babies and follow me around like drooling puppies just to sit on my lap. LOL

You can check out our breeds section here on BYC to see what people are saying about the different breeds so you can get an idea on their tempermants...

Welcome to BYC! [IMG]We're glad to have you. If you want kid-friendly chickens, I recommend Wyandottes. They are very docile and pretty, and are great layers if you want eggs. Wyandottes are quite hardy, too. Easter Eggers are also nice gentle birds, and cute because of their fluffy cheeks and green eggs.

Hello :frow and Welcome To BYC! Check out your state thread also for people in your area. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/25/california-northern
X3 on the BYC Breeds section for member reviews on a lot of breeds, and the Henderson chicken breed chart which compares a lot of popular breeds http://www.sagehenfarmlodi.com/chooks/chooks.html As suggested, Wyandottes, Australorps, Orpingtons, Delawares, Sussex, and the Easter Eggers for colored eggs, are all decent egg layers that tend to be good pets. Silkies and Cochins are probably the most popular chickens for children's pets, they are really friendly usually, but are not that good at egg laying and are broody.
