Hello chicken-folk! My name is Carla Edelman (username Cardinarla). I have MS, and have gotten way too sedentary avoiding pain, so I thought taking care of chickens would be a good way to get a bit more active. I ordered 7 chicks from Meyer Hatchery last November. We started them off in a brooder in the living room, and moved them to a wire 6' dog pen lined with Mylar shipping bags and cardboard in our garage on Christmas Day. They are all tame and love to jump on our heads when we let them. I have three buff Orpington, two buff brahmas, a barred rock, and a black australorp. They are 6 weeks old. They are roosting in the pen, and they love fermented feed, dried oregano, and broccoli sprouts. I never though of chickens as smart birds, but my baby Dino's are a real hoot! I can hardly wait for spring, so they can get outside and explore. We live in the suburbs, and I hope our neighbors will have no problem with our new 'pets'.

G’Day from down under Carla [IMG] Welcome!

We also live in the suburbs and while the girls can get a bit excited and noisy at times, no complaints from the neighbours .. we have found that sharing fresh eggs helps [IMG]

I hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun. Unlike non chicken loving friends, family and colleagues, BYC’ers never tire of stories or pictures that feature our feathered and non feathered friends [IMG]
