Hello all! I'm Kelly, from upstate South Carolina. I'll be a first time chicken owner in a few weeks. After almost 12 years of marriage, 10 of those being repeatedly asked by my husband for chickens, I gave in [IMG] We have some land and have the room for a small flock. Unfortunately, we have the predators that go along with the land as well- cats (6 of our own), dogs, foxes, coyotes, raccoons, hawks, owls. . . I think even squirrels can stir up trouble, but I could be wrong 'bout that. I have an animal science degree from Clemson, but I stuck more to the large animal side of things and took maybe one poultry class, so I am a total newbie. My husband had chickens as a kid- mostly Araucanas, a few others- so it has been a while since he's had them as well. My dream would be for them to be completely free-range, but with our predator population, I don't want it to become the Chicken Buffet for Wildlife, you know? So I guess our coop/fenced-in area will have to do. Anyway, I let the hubs order a few and they should be delivered around July 12. We ordered from MMH and I am hoping all goes ok. I am a bit nervous but getting kind of excited. We have 2 daughters, ages 7 and almost 5, who are very excited to meet the little peepers. We have a brooder and I am researching like crazy about everything else. I'm looking forward to getting to know some chicken enthusiasts here. I've already learned a lot just perusing various threads, and of course I love looking at the beautiful pictures!

[IMG] and welcome. Glad you joined us. You don't really want to get to know us. If you do, we will talk you into getting more chickens. So you may as well learn chicken math. I started with 4, now just look at my signature... [IMG]

Thanks guys! LOL Ms. FuzzyButts- we don't even have them yet and I'm already starting to get into it, so you can't scare me off with stories of chicken craziness [IMG] I was just reading the "worst predator" thread and realized that skunks, snakes, and opossums are also on my list of local predators *sigh* I know myself, these chickens are going to end up being my pets with names, I'm going to get to know their personalities, and I'll be the one crying my eyes out when they get killed. My husband assures me he can build a fairly tight coop/run, but I know every precaution can be taken and there are no guarantees. That is why I have held out for so many years!
