Hi! I moved out to the country in June and got my first 4 hens and 1 rooster as an anniversary gift in November. Everyone knows the 10th is the live poultry anniversary, right? They were 6 months old at the time. They started laying in the middle of our coldest weather snap last month when we had a rare few inches of snow on the ground, and they've been dependable layers since. They're a mixed breed lot, not sure what their ancestors even were! But they lay large brown eggs, and I love them. My roo didn't come back to the coop after a day of free ranging (as they always do) about 10 days ago. I just replaced him with a new rooster yesterday. So that's my flock! And about ME... I own a preschool on the same property as my home, and my students help feed the chickens (usually fruit scraps from snack time) and gather eggs. I love that they're all getting those experiences! I have 4 kids, a husband, and 2.5 cats (the .5 is a stray that we're probably adopting by default.) Happy to be here and eager to learn and help where I can.
