Hello everyone. My husband and I have purchased our first home and we're planting our roots here in Sumter, SC. We have about 2.5 acres in the county with a grape vineyard, and we can't wait to own chickens, peafowl, and some goats. My daughter is getting ready for her first science fair project, and we're thinking this is a great excuse/opportunity/motivator for us to finally have chickens! We're wondering if anyone in the area might have 3-6 fertilized eggs for hatching (looking for brown egg layers) for purchase or free if you're happy to donate. We don't mind driving to get them up to an hour commute. My husband works in Bethune. We're hoping to get started on this project soon....within the next week or two. I'm sure I'm more excited than our kids. [IMG]

@SumterChix2355 I too am new to sumter SC and it will be my home for the next few years. I really want to start a new flock here but I live within the city, about a mile from the Air Force Base. I have been trying to find the ordinances regarding keeping chickens in the county/city but haven't been able to find anything online and both the county and city offices have yet to get back to me. Do you by any chance know what the ordinances for Sumter are?

@TenDutch I don't know the exact ordinances but I called City County Planning Department and spoke with Hellen. Within the city you are allowed to own 3-4 chickens for personal use, but NO roosters. In the state of SC you must be inspected and licensed in order to sell eggs. Now, something you'll want to check into is if there are regulations against owning poultry in your subdivision. For example, most HOAs have regulations against backyard chickens. I am zoned within the county, so there are less regulations for me. If all is okay in your neighborhood, get to know your neighbors and feel them out for how they'll feel about it. We free range and I'm lucky mine don't mind my noisy roosters or my flock wandering into their yards. Sorry it took me so long to reply. I haven't been on here much.
