Good Morning everyone! I live in Orlando and I'm a wife and mom to 4 children. As costs rise, I have come to a realization that we will be needing to find alternative resources that are less expensive. We just purchased 4 Barred Rock Chickens to use for eggs and we are truly enjoying them both as a recreational purpose and as a need for nutritional resources. We've certainly learned a lot as well. We are in search of a nice chicken coop now so we won't have issues with our neighbors who find the coop to be unsightly. We wish to own a farm some time in the future even if it's just a couple of acres. Any newbie advice is greatly appreciated.

Welcome Newbie from Orlando. I haven't been here long but already love it. I'm sure you will too. It's a beautiful breed of chicken you started with. You are right to shift towards self-subsistence. Have fun here on BYC!

Hello there and welcome to BYC! [IMG]

Definitely stop by our learning center for lots of great info on all the aspects of keeping poultry. Wyandottes has left you with the link.

Barred Rocks are great birds to keep! Mine sure are power layers and make great lap warmers too.

Enjoy this great journey you are on and welcome to our flock!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to our flock. Barred Rocks are a great breed; very hardy, tough, reasonably docile, and good layers of large, brown eggs. Please feel free to ask any other questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck with your BRs.
