Next generation question

This may seem like a stupid question but when it comes to next generation of babies how do you classify which generation it is? As we will be keeping records of who with who and what Gen they are. For instance-

I know 1st and 1st = 2nd Gen

But what would a baby be considered if it's from : 1st & 2nd gen - 3rd or still 2nd

I always had this issue figuring it out even with family heritage -

Colored leg bands would be the simplest way. Use a combination of two different colors when the time arises. Keep it written down in a log book.
