I was leaving light on 24 hours a day but when i checked my chicken web camera they were never resting so I started shutting off light , but then only one chicken was on heated roost . The other five stayed on floor all night. So today I installed very small night light and all six could see roost and are fast asleep with nice warm feet .

I would still remove the night light. You may have to do it gradualy, and/or retrain them, put them on the roost by hand. If there is a natural decrease in light inside the coop as darkness falls, they should eventually adjust to roosting while darkness falls.

When light is used for a few hours in the early mmorning to improve winter egg laying, they wake up when the light goes on. They need darkness to rest well. If they are accustomed to light, they may not adjust to darkness right away, just as young chicks may cheep al night the first night they are left in darkness to sleep.

As flockwatcher has stated, it is best to provide supplemental lighting in the AM. That way as dusk approaches the birds will go to roost.

[IMG] always good to see a new chicken farmer [IMG] .......

The light really needs to be faded out as chickens really only need 14 hours a day and a heated roost I never thought of that good job on thinking of the comfort of your chickens .........
