One of my EEer chicks has 9 toes total - Five on one foot, four on the other. I'm guessing it is a genetic defect - has anyone else had this happen?

I have hatched a houdan that had 9 toes before. I took it this just happens sometimes. I would have culled her but she died just the other day.

Yes it happens with EE's because they are mutts of any breed there is really no way of knowing what is in an EE unless you have been breeding your own for generations-that could still produce a throw back from some unknown chicken though at any point. Here is a picture of a 9 toed feather legged EE we hatched.

My EE roo is like that also... I know hes got a lil silkie in him. I just had a ee/silkie banty born with 12 toes, six each foot, healthy as heaven. I kinda like the lil mutant.
