I've always wanted chickens but never lived in a place where I could have them. However, my family is moving and will soon have a lot more outdoor space - nice big backyard in a more rural community

I want to make sure I'm fully aware of all the township ordinances and regulations before I commit to adding any feathered friends. I realize each town is different but my broad question is this: Is there a difference between a pet chicken and ones that are considered "poultry or agriculture". It's sometimes hard to tell if a backyard pet would be held to the same regulations as a farm.

[IMG] So glad you joined us.

I'm not expert but think all officials consider chickens as farm animals…..although I know mine are pets.

Hope your new location ordinances allow you to get chickens.

Welcome to BYC! [IMG]We're glad to have you.

I'm not great with regulations/ordinances. But, I think that chickens are almost always considered "livestock" or agriculture.

Welcome to Backyard chickens. Often a tiny serama can pass as a cage bird and a silkie is unusual enough where some people consider them some type of foo foo dog (from a distance. Just sayin' in case house chickens would fill the bill for you. There is a very good thread called "people with house chickens."
