DH was working in the garden & heard a commotion in the chicken run across the yard. The cockerel appeared to be paying his attentions to one of the white chickens

. I checked the chickens and saw no broken feathers but the two most mature white rock pullets had dirty backs. We have 2 or 3 pullets with red combs and wattles. Does this mean I have an exceptionally horny cockerel

or point of lay pullets? These are my first chickens. The cockerel and RIR pullets are 17 weeks and the White Rock pullets are 16 weeks.

Cockrels mature earlier than pullets, so they will start mating behavior before the girls are ready. In a flock including mature birds, the cockrels get corrected and learn to be more polite sooner. It will all work out fine, as long as no actual injuries happen. Mary
