My older birds, the brahmas, adore the figs that come off of the tree just outside their coop. However, being big fat, non-flying chickens, the brahmas have always waited patiently on the ground for me to pick them some figs or make do with the ones they can find on the ground. My younger birds - speckled sussex, salmon faverolles, turkens, EEs, polish and silkies are not nearly as big as the brahmas and with the exception of the silkies, fly quite well. Yesterday the younger birds discovered the fig tree. Today the tree is full of chickens, branches weighed down with chickens. So much for making fig preserves this year.
