Hi! Well my one silkie rooster , I just saw, hasmno tail. I'm pretty sure that it was mostly feathers though, thank goodness! But still, I'm a little startled, will it grow back?? And there is a small patch of bare skin showing, is that okay? I saw a bunch of feathers in the pen and I thought that it was a fight, and then I saw a hole in the ground, thinking it's a rat or weasel. What do you think? I penned all the chickens in the coop just for safety reasons. Any advice? Will my roo be okay? Thanks!

How old? Sounds like he is transitioning into a man and he is molting his tail feathers to grow his fancier ones.

I have a few young Serama cockerels doing the same thing.

I think that your rooster is in molting and it a natural process. It׳s changing it's old feathers to new ones.

Thanks for replying! I'm not sure as he already is full grown, but he could be getting new feathers. It just looks like he doesn't have a tail. If you know a bob-tailed cat, it looks like that, but a chicken of course!

Nothing necessarily wrong with it. The bare skin is not a concern unless it is damaged. It should be smooth and blue/black in color on him.

Is he losing any other feathers?

No more feathers but the skin is pink. And for the question above he is only about close to a year old. I think we got him last spring/summer.

Do you have any pictures you could post? purebred silkies shouldn't really have pink skin that I know of...

No I do not have any pics but he is a silkie with 4 others and he has the blue ears too. I believe his skin is blue gray color but this tail is pink color, maybe because its irritated.

Have you checked for lice/mites? Not trying to worry you but regular molting doesn't really inflame the skin.

I just found out that it was a possum that killed my one silkie and hurt my rooster. I think my roo stood up for Rosalie my baby girl that died.[IMG] I feel so bad, like I can bring her back, but that's impossible. My roo did all he could which I'm proud of. We killed the possum also. Life just can't let up I guess...
