I just moved a few weeks ago to 2 1/2 acres in a AG area...mainly so I could get chickens:cd

So I have 6 beautiful girls now and was wondering about my coop bedding/cleaning...this is what I do and any thoughts on safety, etc. would be appreciated:caf

I basically live on a sand hill so, since sand is free and plentiful I use it inside the coop. I poop scoop in the mornnings and about once a week or when the sand seems to be getting low I poop scoop, rake it, sprinkle 5% Sevin and then add fresh sand over the top and rake it lightly again.

I have seen on here many people use sand in the run but not necessarily in the coop...also, is how I'm using the Sevin ok??? I take out the water and food when I do this.

Tia for any thoughts/suggestions!

Personally I would not use Sevin except to treat an infestation of lice and/or mites. And then I would dust the chickens directly using a bag and the chicken's head sticking out. For general maintenance of the indoor bedding DE would be better.
