I can't remember if I introduced myself 5 years ago and I can only access my last few hundred posts but here goes. I'm old as the hills. Grew up on farms and in the city simultaneously. We had a rural 100 acre farm, a suburban 40 acre farm (slashed to 3 acres) and a house in the city. Raised cattle, horses, hogs, chickens and pheasant. The suburban farm had roughly 100 free range leghorns for egg sales. Later in life, I volunteered in the tropics doing maintenance and caring for Scarlet and Great Green Macaws in a breeding facility with hundreds of birds. Everyone there kept chickens. I grew to love not needing an alarm clock because of all the roosters crowing in the neighborhood. I have had about 30+ breeds of chickens but have settled on my favorite, Black Penedesencas. I've been breeding them for a few years on a small property with large vegetable beds, fruits, berries and 8 chicken housing units scattered through the garden beds and fruit. Or perhaps more accurately, the fruit and vegetables are scattered among the chicken areas.
