Hello! I am a chicken newbie with a question about my silkie's silly behavior. While she sits in the nest to lay, she likes to cover her back with hay. Sometimes I'll go out and she will be just COVERED in hay! It's hilarious and strange. Why does she do this? Is this a common behavior?

This is actually very common in hens on the nest -- some get very into it (I had an EE once that would go so far as to arrange the nesting materiel in such a way she could burrow into it and you had to really look or her to see her in it) and some never do it at all.

That is so funny! She seems almost in a trance as she does it. It amuses me...other than the fact that she takes half of the nest out with her every time she leaves! Lol.

2 funny stories^^^.
It is 'odd' but normal/natural.
Had one girl last summer who was dropping nest bedding out of the nest...smh.
