Wow! It's really coming down right now. The snowflakes are huge. Can't wait for the drive home from work.

I'm in Baltimore, OH. and we have had snow on the ground for over two weeks now. My baby girl, Audrey, just barely 6 mos. old, just laid her first egg today! I was so surprised. I thought that since it has been soooo cold this month, that she would not lay until the weather got better. She made my day [IMG]

    Congrats on your first egg.
My girls started laying on Dec 1st and every day since!
I was surprised they started to lay too because of everything I've read on these boards about the cold and light etc.

I heard someone say: A chicken will choose to live or lay during the winter.

I guess mine chose to lay because I feed and water them so well!

Looking forward to spring ... we will see spring in Ohio won't we?

Thanks for the congrats bigredfeather and TeriNick50. Since laying her first egg, Audrey has layed every day but 2. I think that is pretty good. She usually lays medium size eggs, but one day she layed a giant egg! It was much bigger than the large ones you buy at the store. I felt kinda sorry for her, that had to hurt. Then she went back to laying medium sized. I wonder why that one day it was so big? If I had another girl, I would have sworn it was laid by another chicken. It is so rewarding to go out and play with my chickens and get rewarded with an egg. I can't wait to get more girls. I am thinking more rocks or wyandottes.
I know it doesn't seem like it now, but spring will be here before we know it. That is what I keep trying to convince myself. The snow has melted here and now we have the mud that the dogs track in. I prefer the snow. Have a great day everyone [IMG]

Hi, I'm from Cortland,Ohio. I'm raising ninja Australorps. I call them ninja because we're not allowed to have them here so I have to hide them. I am ordering a dozen today. for a June arrival. I am so excited. [IMG]

Quote:Good luck with the hiding. As long as you don't get any roos, there shouldn't be a problem. I am excited for you. B4 I got mine, I would have never guessed that I would love my chickens as much as I do and spend as much time with them as I do. Until you own your own chickens you just don't realize the personalities that they have and how much fun you can have with them. Good luck with everything:)

Quote:Welcome. I'm just down the road from you in Niles. I have a few Australorpe hens, and I just love them. They are very easy going, and lay almost every day.

I own a lawn care business, and have a few customers in Cortland.
