Mine destroyed an ant nest at around 2-3 weeks old. They spent DAYS eating every ant they could find in that area! They were fine.

My son's great joy is catching moths and other bugs that fly around the porch lights to feed them to the chicks in the brooder. It's amazing that two-day-old chicks instinctively pounce on bugs, tear them apart amongst themselves and devour them.

Mine does that, too, but with crickets and any other bug he can uncover in the yard. I hope he just wants to be nice to the chickens!!!

I watched one of my chicks zero in on an ant, study it, pounce, peck, spit it out and shake it's head in disgust at the taste ... I was so disappointed.

Most ants are acidic; some actually smell vinegary if you crush them. Some chickens like it, most don't. I like pickle juice with a splash of everclear. My wife thinks it's disgusting and sticks with Dr Pepper. Sounds like OP has at least one chick with good taste.
