I have eleven one-week-old chicks. My nine-month-old chicks are getting some of their feed out on the floor. I was wondering about cleaning this up and putting in my brooder for the young ones to scatch and dust bath in. They will still have access to their chick starter. I hatched these chicks and haven't put them on shavings because the hatchery chicks ate the shavings and I lost three of them.

I would'nt esp. at one week old. the older chicks could maybe pass something on to your younger ones that they have not built up an immune system to handle quite yet. As far as some bedding you can use some very dry and clean hay instead of shavings. If you use shavings try to get oak or some other hardwood type shavings not pine or cedar.
