Hi Everyone!!
Ok.. so three months ago my one Pekin was given enroflxacin and flagy.. ,
I questioned it when i got home bc I learned that both medications are essentially illegal to still give in the US and that once given i cannot ever eat the eggs. I was told this was an FDA issue really intended for factory farming and that i should not worry.. however, i am wondering , especially as a physician myself.. does this lead to antibiotic resistance? How long is it safe before i can eat her eggs.. i believe this is just a USA thing.. someone please offer some input..THANK YOU

Illegal to give to poultry or what? My dogs have been on those meds before... (prescribed by vet)

Looks like in my research, they were banning the use of Baytril and Flagyl in the water, or Flagyl in the food, given on a routine basis. They didn't want diseases resistant to Baytril and Metronizidol, which can happen more easily with chronic administration. From my research, both can still be used for acute diseases, just not on a preventative basis.

I'm not finding withdrawl times for Flagyl, but I bet Baytril is a long time because in dogs it stays in their systems for a long time. Flagyl is a commonly used drug for humans, so I'm not concerned about withdrawl times for humans, unless it's a taste issue. Flagyl does taste horrific and will make you automatically gag if you get a taste of it directly.

Both are banned in any form (oral, injectable, in water). Baytril is banned because of potential drug resistance to it, specifically campylobacter, and metronidazole is banned because of the potential to cause cancer.

Typical useless idiots. Both hubby and I are Drs and marvel at the stupidity daily. If I'm confronted with an animal and either medication will save the animals life, I'm not listening to the useless idiots. Neither will my vet. He knows I'm a human doctor and worked for vets for 8 years before med school anyway. He's always prepared for a handful of articles when he comes to see my horses. It keeps him up to date. We still use Flagyl in dogs for diarrhea, but it's a low dose and for maybe 5 days max. If there's other options, I'm totally willing to use them, but from my reading with respiratory issuesI, there's not much time or options. I already have Oxine for fogging, if needed. From what I've seen with my ducks, you don't have lots of time to try different treatments. they die too easily. The mega poultry farms of millions of chickens routinely used prophylactic antibiotics and caused this situation. It's proabably why they've also made Corid a prescription item. The AVMA has quite a hold on meds here. In some cases It's actually medically unethical.

Metronidazole can be used in *all* non food animals.

Baytril can be used *all *non-food animals

Baytril: For Subcutaneous Use In Beef Cattle And Non-Lactating Dairy Cattle, For Intramuscular Or Subcutaneous Use In Swine, Not For Use In Female Dairy Cattle 20 Months Of Age Or Older Or In Calves To Be Processed For Veal - Never in poultry.

right ? exactly .. my ducks when sick needed the meds, the one did not "need"baytril, and unfortunately, i have a kidney issue that has led to me requiring levaquin.. so when i heard of this issue and my one vet was 100% upset that another r vet prescribed it i was very confused. Yes, as a doctor, ( human too, lol) i was a bit annoyed but particularly at the different opinions.. but my girl is making us the most beautiful eggs and it feels wrong to disgard them... it has been 4 months.. i think it should be fine..
I agree with you also about the hold on some meds being unethical..
