one hen has a 2" diameter black , circular 'rash', and in the middle is a fairly large (3/4" high, a small child's finger in thickness) growth. it's just an inch or so from her vent. we just separated her to see if shes laying or not. photo probably isnt much help. her rear end is a bit messier than usual. the neighboring farmer suggested we cull, but they are sorta pets... i'd hate to do that.

Is it mites? They do create a messy bottom, and black stuck on speckles that look like a rash. You should be able to see them by really parting the feathers down to the skin and looking closely for any movement. A flashlight really stirs them up for some reason.

i ended up taking her to the vet. i have parrots and i was nervous that if it was something contageous my parrots would get it - so for $25 it was worth the peace of mind. Apparently something swiped at her - racoon or fax - and it was infected. doc gave me topical ointment and we seperated her. hope this helps someone else if they see this thread and have a similar issue.
