I am disgusted and confused right now. I have had darla for about 3 years now. I have always been proud of what a great guard dog she is. She has been around newborn kittens, rabbits and chicks without incident. I let my hens hatch and raise their chicks on their own since darla had always kept them safe. Today I heard a commotion. Darla had ran up and grabbed a chick. I was yelling at her to drop it and she just looked at me and ate it. I felt like killing her. I don't know what to do now. I know she obviously can't be trusted around chicks, but what about the adults? Should I assume she is going to decide they are lunch too?

In my experience if the dog does it once she'll do it again

Little chicks move differently from adults - more like bugs. So they can be a bigger temptation. I'm real concerned, though, that she disobeyed your instruction to drop it. Was she trained to obey that command? If so, she needs an intensive refresher! And supervision around the birds, now...
