Onions? Safe or not?

Hiya,
I cooked up potatoes carrots spinach garlic and onions (2 very small onions!) and now I read somewhere - not on BYC - that it is bad for red blood cells and not to feed them onions.
Is this true or an outdated site? It was far down on Google and not a trusted site. So before I give the chickens a bowl I wanted to check with you guys!

MIne will scratch up and eat the onions out of my garden. I haven't seen any harm.

From what I have seen on BYC onions are ok. But think about it, in most areas of the US there is wild onions that can grow in your yard and I have not heard of people losing birds due to eating lots of onions (wild) when it comes in thick in the spring....

They CAN eat onions and cousins of the onion.. but only in small quantities and not as often.
