This morning I found another duckling with my hen, Iris. Well, sort of with her. She is very attentive to the duckling hatched Thurs, but is ignoring this one. At least she didn’t just kill it, right?
I took the new babe and put it near a setting duck (hatching any time) to see what would happen. When I left, CoCo the duck was raising up—hoping she plans to let the duckling under her. The duckling hatched sometime in the past 12 hours.
Was that right to try? If CoCo does accept this duckling, will she reject the “later” hatchlings, like Iris did?
