I have a baby chick that got attacked last night. My daughter (4years old) left the coop door open and I'm not sure if it was a stray cat or my one year old hen because my hen is also missing feathers. The chick is around 2 months old and I'm not sure of the breed. It's head definitely not pretty. She is drinking water and eating now. I did rinse the wound and put some cream over it but I am worried that I might have to put her down. Any advice on care or if I should put her down would be appreciated. I've had chickens for years and never had this problem.

It looks pretty gory, but chickens can be surprisingly resilient. If she's eating, drinking, and pooping normally, I'd just keep her safe and comfortable (a vitamin and electrolyte supplement in her water may help with the stress of the attack and speed healing) and keep the wound clean. A wound healing spray like Vetericyn can help facilitate healing, but an antibiotic ointment without pain reliever is good, too.

I think she still has a chance at a good quality of life. Best wishes for her recovery!
