Tried twice on eggs first batch of 9 - 7 went to lock down only to die immediately before/during/after LD. Second attempt was a dozen from a different breeder and post office completely scrambled them. [IMG] Decided to leave the stress of egg hatching to the hatcheries.

Ideal should be shipping my 7 Millie D'uccle chicks on the 3rd of next month. Have you ordered from them before? What should I expect? Was your experience good/bad went awry but quickly resolved? I don't expect show quality, not by a mile. I just want a calm bird that'll tolerate me even after they grow older.

Currently, my setup is a 10 gallon fish tank with a water bottle, a folded up towel in the bottom covered with a dog wee pad, it has a screen-cover lid with a clamp lamp and various wattage bulbs - the infrared bulb I got was way too hot for this though so I just got red party bulbs and regular bulbs. I have chick feed and a small dish for them to eat out of (one generally about the size you'd use for a gecko's calcium/food) and finally I put in a few small plushies for them to cuddle with. Is this appropriate? At least, until they get big enough for my bath-tub brooder?

Any who, wish me luck. This is my third try at chickens now. Technically fourth as I ordered a dozen eggs off MyPetChicken and they still keep sending me notices that it'll be longer than they thought. [IMG] Their order page says 12 days but after waiting that they email you saying it'll be another two weeks. Yea. They did this to me before(with which I got a full refund) but I thought I'd give them a second chance. So much for that idea. I'm just waiting to see if it takes long enough it'll go into when they start having chicks and I can request to buy day olds with the money instead.

Congrats! You'll do fine with the chicks. Sorry you had a hard time hatching though.

Your setup seems adequate... But make sure to post pics of your new babies when they arrive! [IMG] [IMG]

Ideal let you buy only 7 chicks?

    Thank you guys <3

and yup, only seven. Ideal does orders by amount spent rather than quantity of chicks as they give you boys that would otherwise be put down to keep the others warm. I'm worried about that but not too worried. I just hope they have the sense to use a bantam roo chick for this. Some people mentioned having their chicks packed special for bantams/standards mixed in together so the bigger chicks wont smother the bantams but I somehow doubt this as they don't seem to sex their bantam breeds else I would have ordered all females and let the boy heating pad be their guardian X3 But, I'll just assume they know what they're doing - they seem to. Granted temp is not so much an issue where I live (Florida).

I'll DEFO post piccys for sure. I can hardly wait for the arrival as it is. BUT. This part makes me smile - they'll be here before any hatching eggs would hatch if I got more. IN FACT, based on the information they gave and date they are going out. Ideal must be setting the eggs today. 8D *ancy* [IMG]

Oooh, Rosaline, where did you order yours and when are yours expected to arrive? [IMG] I wish you luck too!

I have had a hard time with shipped eggs too. I ordered 8 banty chicks from Ideal last summer, and they included 6 standard BR packing peanuts. The banties did fine. Good luck with your new babies.
