We have thought this was a hen, but she started crowing recently (we originally had 4 "hens" of different breeds that we got last Spring, 2 started crowing in the summertime, and we realized they were roosters and so we gave them away to a farmer. Now this Orpington "hen" is crowing throughout the day. Is it a hen or rooster? Our city ordinance won't let us keep her if she is a rooster. And my daughter is heartbroken it might not be a hen, but we've got to get it figured out... Can you help please? Haven't gotten any eggs from her yet, but we only got her as a chick last June.

Male hackles, male saddle feathers, and that darker shade of buff on the shoulder/wing mean you have a cockerel.
