We need help. We have a pet silkie that now was egg bound and prolapsed for the second time and she is only 9 months old. Is there any hormon treatment that can prevent her from laying or do we have to take the risk to operate on her. She is now recovering and both our vet and we are looking for options since we know an operation is very very risky. We love our chick and hope someone can help us with what to do?

Welcome to BYC. There are hormone implants, suprelorin or deslorin, that can be given every few months to prevent laying. An avian vet may be necessary, although you could check with a regular local vet too. Spaying would be a bit risky since chickens don't always do well with anesthesia. To temporarily stop her from laying, you can place her in a darkened room or covered cage for 16 hours overnight for several days. Here is some info on the implants:

Let us know where you live in case anyone may know or recommend a vet for you. Many of us have special pet chickens we don't want to lose.

Yes we live in France :)

Yesterday we went to the vet and injected a suprelorin implant. Now we must just wait and see. He would have been willing to operate as last solution but agreed to that this was better. Now we can just hope.
