So after losing all but one of my small flock to a domestic ferret, hubby covered EVERYTHING in Hardware cloth, made a roof, and reinforced the dog crate door. We installed cameras (which my hubby watches constantly) and found some new pullets.
Our tiny little bantam was so depressed with the loss of her flock it was hard to get her to eat. So instead of a normal quarantine we let them all meet. I know it is risky, but the cries coming from that sweet girl were heartbreaking.
She has since become top hen, and it is so funny to watch her tell the others what to do. She kept the littles in the coop today during a thunderstorm and gets very jealous if we cuddle another chicken.
But the purring.. makes me smile. No more calling for her lost flock.
