I'm just getting back into chickens and trying to work out the best methods before actually getting my new girls.

I have a coop that my husband built years ago. It Was built so thatbthere is an outdoor area penned in, but with a wooden floor. (I will add some true outdoor runs where the birds will actually be on the ground as well). The wooden floor pen is under roof and the walls are chicken wire.

What would you use to absorb the poo and all in that pen? In the past I used pine shavings, but wondered why others would suggest. I've considered putting a few inches of soil in there, but it seems like that would be crazy hard to clean.

Shavings or even sand would work fine. Predators can rip through chicken wire very easily, so I'd replace it with hardware cloth. Otherwise, it sounds neat. Got any pictures?
