    Hi! I'm in the Greater Philadelphia Area looking to raise my own backyard chickens. I'm somewhat on the fence and currently trying to find a local breeder in order to avoid buying from a large hatchery... Love all birds, and cats. ^-^

    Be very picky/careful when buying from a "local breeder"...the last thing any new chicken owner needs is to bring home sick chickens.
    Yes, people do knowingly sell sick birds.

    Not all people do this but you would be surprised just how many do do it.
    Do a lot of research on a person before you buy from them.
    Large major hatcheries are usually pretty safe.
