Panting?

My little babes are under the heat lamp and they seem to have their mouths open.. Are they panting because they are too hot? Or is this something else? Also how can you tell if they are too cold? I dont have a thermometer or anything like that so i kind of have to judge.
 
I would say this is because they're too hot. Mine were doing that when I first got them because I had the lamp directly on top of the cage. You could try raising the lamp higher or adjusting it's position. They're too cold when they're right under the lamp and are huddling together. Hope that helps c:
 
They usually pant when they are hot. Try putting a thermometer in there to monitor the temp. Move the heat lamp up until they seem more comfortable. If they are panting, or all at the edges of the brooder (as far from the heat as they can go) then they are hot. If they are huddled together, feathers puffed out, or chirping loudly, they are cold. If they are happily quietly peeping and sleeping spaced out, they are just right.
