Just pulled a paralysis tick off one of my girls (ducks) it was just under her eye. She isn't showing any symptoms.

I called the vet and asked about a deterrent. I was recommended Avitrol Bird mite and lice spray. They said I need to apply every three days.

My questions are -

Won't it just wash off when swimming?

Does anyone have a better suggestion or experience with tick problems?

Thank you, I have added that now.

My girl pulled through fine. I have been checking their heads and necks every day. I assume that would be the most difficult areas to reach themselves and I don't think I will be able to find a tick under all those down feathers.

Welcome!
I hope you know how to deal with ticks safely, so you aren't exposed to anything they carry.
If it's a permethrin or pyrethrin product with no other insecticides present, and labelled for ducks, it will be safe for them. HOWEVER it's not fine in ponds or streams, as it's very toxic for fish, etc. In a wading pool, okay.
Will it wash off? Likely it will. Call the company and ask!
If these birds are in any 'natural' body of water, I think it's a bad idea.
Ticks are miserable little critters, with no redeeming social value, IMO.

Welcome to BYC @barefootmisty
I'm guessing you're in Australia...have read about the paralysis ticks, very scary!
If so, might want to check in here:

But.....
Where in this world are you located?
Climate, and time of year, is almost always a factor.
Please add your general geographical location to your profile.
It's easy to do, (laptop version shown), then it's always there!
