I think this Black Shoulder peachick is almost 10 weeks old. (IBs in the background are approx. 7-8 weeks old.) Is it still too young to tell if it is a hen or a cock? I know it takes quite a bit longer to tell the sex of India Blue chicks, but I was told that it was possible to tell the BS chicks apart earlier, since the males start to get darker while the hens remain light-colored.
I will need to find a BS mate for this chick, since I was hoping to breed for the BS gene which is recessive. If anyone can identify the gender for me, then would anyone happen to have a young BS of the opposite sex that I could purchase? I live in Southern New Jersey, and it hasn't been easy finding any peafowl breeders in my area. The couple I did find are all out of BS chicks.
