Hi everyone, I would love some info. I am new to chickens and ducks. I got a Pekin drake and he is 1 year old. My question is, how long should I keep him in his pen before letting him out during the day. We have a large pond on our property and I want to let him go to it.

Welcome to BYC.

How long have you had your Pekin? are you keeping him penned so he learns his new place?

I hope your planning on getting him some friends because a lone duck is a very lonely duck he needs some ducks to go out on the pond with and that will also help him top not stand out like a sitting duck too. [Predators]

Plus drakes can try and mate with chicken hens and they are not compatible in the sex department and can be a death sentence for hens.

Hi Miss Lydia,
I got my drake just a day ago, but he is 1 year old. I do want to get him a friend, but I am trying to get set up better.
Thank you for warning me about him trying to mate with my hens, had not heard that.
I welcome any knowledge from those with more experience.

I'd keep him penned up for at least a week. That way he can see and know where he is now and you can interact better with him so he learns you are his friend.

He'll love having some friends ducks being flock animals love their flocks and learn from each other.

Enjoy him Pekins are sweet hearts.

Drakes are just so randy especially young ones, I have my chickens[hens] and ducks and geese all running together and since my drakes have their own females they never mess with the chickens.

Thanks Miss Lydia,
He is still timid of me, but I am checking on him regularly so hopefully he warms up to me.
