Pellet vs Mash?

New to chickens, working out some kinks. I bought organic pelleted food for the pullets. The chicks are still on medicated starter. I recently put the chicks in with the pullets and the pullets love the starter food, they still eat their pellets but seem to go crazy for the starter. Is it the size of the starter? Does it sound like they'd prefer a mash?

Chick starter is generally higher in protein than layer food, so the older birds love it. I wouldn't switch from pellets for this reason, but you may want to consider a grower formula until they are all of laying age, and just put out some oyster shell on the side for the pullets that are laying.
