They are outside. I have them in a 12x12 metal barn I built. Dirt floor with straw. I put in a ceiling fan for hot days and to help ventilate. I’m gonna insulate the walls with foam sheets then cover with wood. Not sure if I need too add a heat source.

Wouldn't hurt to have the insulation. Especially with metal sides but I don't think you need a heat source.
My shelters are just plywood and 2 x 4s and they've always done fine.
I put down a good layer of pine shavings then a bunch of straw.
