I want to buy some fertile duck hatching eggs because I have to get rid of my mandarins and I want to keep ducks. I want everyone to reccommend a breed for me...here are the guidelines:
1. I want it to be friendly...not skittish...a very calm duck
2. Something whose eggs will ship well and will hatch somewhat easily
3. Something that won't fly away (wont even think about it)
4. Okay, something that wont fly in general
5. The eggs should be relatively cheap

Now I know there isnt a perfect duck breed, but I just want something to walk around with me and hang out around the house....thanks

JMHO-- I have had pekins, crested whites, muscovies, rouens and Indian runners. My personal favorite is the runners. Thy are very sweet and followed me around the yard like a dog. I never had issues with them flying because I don't think they knew they were ducks....lol Hope this helps, if it doesn't at least I can bump you. Have a good evening--
H.

I'd say pekins. Mine are like dogs. They're friendly and quite entertaining. They're pretty laid back being ducks. My runners are neurotic. They're really skittish and paranoid. My rouens are calm too but not as much so as the pekins. I don't think they're hard to hatch out and I'd think the eggs would ship well. They're pretty common so I'd think that the eggs would be cheaper.

Mind if I ask why you have to get rid of the mandies? Also, I would be interested in them if you are dead set on getting rid of them. Send me a PM, I'm in SW Ohio. ---George

I am sorry you must get rid of your mandarins.

I love my Anconas and Golden Welsh Harlequins....both are friendly the GWH females are a bit more shy but they are sweet girls.

My welsh harlequins are very entertaining. I was trying to fix the pond pump yesterday and they kept nibbling on my toes while I was bent over working on it. The watermelon colored nail polish was not such a good idea I guess...LOL

I must admit these guys are LOUDER than I thought they would be, but other than that, they are great.

My runner is shy but she gives me a big egg every day.

My rouen drake is also not a people duck, but he is very handsome, does eat from my hand, and just cracks me up as he waddles around the yard trying to keep all his women in line

I also have a buff/khaki mutt who is cute as all get out. She looks like she is made out of milk chocolate. Her favorite thing to do is play in the sprinkler.

What about cayugas or magpies? They are a heavy breed that lay most of the year. They are supposed to quiet and friendly. THe eggs are inexpensie, and they ship well. I can give you some info on a breeder I got my cayugas from. THey are show quality, but not high priced. She also has magpies.

I wanted to add this breeder carries splash and blue cayugas, and some normal black.
