I don't have a pond yet, but I do have 2 kiddie pools. She gives me more than the evil eye, she gives me bruises when I try and give the babies food and water! I'm afraid if her own eggs hatch she won't know what do with them, they'll look awfully different!

she is one protective momma!

thats good though, nothing dare cross her babies, or feel the wrathe of MONSTER KILLER MOMMA DUCK!

I'd go ahead, and atleast try to take the baby chicks away, before her eggs hatch, chances are hers will hatch at night, and by morning they'll be out and about. or she'll get bored, thinking no more eggs will hatch, and leave the nest.

one of my mallard hens is sitting right now, and she gets down right nasty if I bug her, she becomes a puffy hissing MOMMA FROM HECK!

I tried to take the first one but she chased me off the nest, and she's stayed with her eggs throughout both chicks hatching so I think she's there for the duration. I'm kind of hoping with the hen next to her starts hatching her chicks, the chicks will gravitate over to her. She has 2 duck eggs under her I'm trying to snag and put under the duck since they take longer!

Yeay!!!! She's hatching ducklings now!! She has two, here is one of them. She also has 6 pips, and 2 zips on more ducky eggs.

very cute, whats the other duckling look like??

So far they both look like that one. We just made a yucky discovery though, one ducky tried to pip and the end of one of the chicken eggs that had hatched was stuck over the end of the duck egg. The baby was trying to pip through 2 shells! We grabbed the duck, I got pecked to death before I grabbed her bill, and Steven took the one egg off the other to see if it might still make it.

She has 4 now, but all I've seen are pieces of the eggs she's kicked out of the nest, and the one ducky in whole. The others are under her.

Wouldn't you know someone starts hatching and the weather turns ugly. It started raining and blowing cold air right into the nest area where momma duck is doing her hatching! I tried to use feed sacks and shelter her and the other hen. She's kicked several egg shells out from under her and if all them are live she's got at least 5 or 6 ducklings now to go with the chicks. I'll try and get pics of them when I get home. Now I'm wondering when the other nest will start hatching, the hen next to her has been on her nest almost as long as she has.
