Pine Shavings

Ok I used pine shavings in my brooder today and my babies wont stop eating them. Is that bad? Should I change out the pine?

Mine eat it too. I put alfalfa over it or a old towel. I don't want them eating it and getting stuck in the crop.

How old are your babies now? If under a week old then I would quit using until they are over a week. I had read where they don't recommend using pine shavings until over a week old so thats what I did. Mine ate the shavings too but it didn't harm them. Just be sure to start sprinkling non-soluable grit on their food so it will help break it down if you aren't already doing that. I was very particular with picking out the really hard pieces when I changed their bedding because I didn't want to take a chance with that but the thin shaving broke down and passed through without a problem.

Thanks Goosehaven and OmaBird for your replies. My babies are 1 1/2 weeks old. I do give them some grit to help them with thier food. I guess im just being over protective.
