Here's a cute cake- just in time for Easter!

I made this for my daughter's 14th birthday sleepover party this past weekend. The recipe is from the Food Network:
    http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/food-network-kitchens/peep-cake-recipe/index.html

The directions were easy to follow. My daughter wanted chocolate cake, so I used two chocolate box cake mixes with the addition of some espresso powder for a richer flavor. I also made a batch of mocha filling to put between the cake layers- I even sliced the bowl cakes in half cross-wise to make more layers. More layers= more filling!

The one flaw was the hot pink icing. I put too much food coloring in, and it ended up with a bad aftertaste. The texture of the icing was great, and it was fairly easy to mold the Peep shape with it.. it just wasn't delicious. Thank goodness the cake and the mocha filling was so good- the girls just avoided the pink icing. Oh well. It looked fabulous! [IMG]

Looks wonderful! Have you ever heard about the peep contest that the Washington Post does every year? Not quite Pink Peep Cakes but cute, and assuredly delicious -

Your cake made me think about the contest - and it is always too fun to look at the entries. Glad to hear the girls enjoyed all the hard work you put into the cake - yum!

Yes! I'm very familiar with the Peep Contest in the Post. A friend of mine enters every year and has been a finalist a couple of times. The entries are so elaborate now- too much work for me! Looking forward to seeing the winners for this year's contest on Wednesday.

It was kinda sad to cut into it! I beheaded it with the first cut and the birthday girl got the first piece from it's little Peep head. I felt like a mad butcher! [IMG]

It's a good thing you got such a cute picture. Maybe you could make another one for Easter Sunday. All of us here can help you eat it. :>)

I don't know, our family Easter tradition is the good ole Bunny Cake. My sister and I have been making this cake for YEARS, and now our girls expect to make one every year. Anybody else been making this one since the 70s???

That bunny cake is an old one. My mother used to make that in the 1950's. It will never be too old fashioned and always be a huge hit.

I LOVE that peeps cake, adorable!
I make the bunny cake just about every year, the kids love the bunny cake, just as I did when my Mom made it for me when I was growing up! [IMG]

Our bunny cake is a little different than the one shown.
