So my chicks are 10 days old and i anticipate the coop being complete in about a week to week and a half. I have thoroughly enjoyed brooding them indoors, watching them grow and having them near so my family can spend time with them. I do however plan to move them out at about 3 weeks old. I live in MA and the nighttime temps will likely be in the 40s so heat will still be needed. Ive been using a heatlamp indoors with a red bulb and they've been doing great. They tolerate a temp of about 78 under the lamp right now. I a toying with the idea of transitioning to the heating pad outdoors but my question is this....my girls love to roost already. LOVE it. Once in the coop wont theyre intincts still be to roost verses hide under the pad? Im wondering if based on how theyve been raised thus far if im just better off providing them a red bulb and a roost. Thoughts? As far as day and night go, i find that once all ambient lights are off in tge house and the sun goes down, they know even with the red bulb that its night time...and they sleep. It hasnt mixed up their days/nights at all.
